Many of us, especially women put self-care last on the to-do list. If it is even on there at all!

Lately I have been hearing a similar theme from clients such as.. “I just don’t have time. I have laundry on Monday, the kids have activities Tuesdays and Thursdays, and I’m working double time this week. My family comes first so maybe once things settle down I will be able to do something for myself”.

Lets be honest, when do things settle down? They don’t. We live in a time where we are always on the go.

Self-care is usually not a regular occurrence. It’s not scheduled in like our kids dance class, swim lesson or laundry day. Self-care or as I like to call it “Me” time usually falls by the way side. Many of us feel guilty about it. It means time away from work, our partner or kids. But really, what good are we to anyone when we are exhausted and frazzled? When we take time to take care of ourselves everyday, we are able to take care of everyone and everything else about 900 times better!

You know how you sometimes feel after a long day of work, you’re exhausted.  It is so easy to come home in a grumpy or irritated mood when you are feeling like that.  And when you are in that state of grumpiness, it is easy to lose patience with your loved ones.  We have all been there. We come home in a mood, something sets us off and we snap. Then we feel horrible and have that mom guilt come over us. Not a good feeling.

Now flip the script and picture yourself coming home from the spa. You come home calm… probably with a huge smile on your face. You feel relaxed and grounded.  In that state you would have a lot more patience to deal with everything going on at home. Now I’m not saying have a spa-day everyday. As amazing as that would be, it’s obviously unrealistic. But scheduling in 20, 40, 60 minutes for yourself everyday is totally doable. And let’s be honest, we always make time for what is important to us. If you don’t think that is true, just stop for a minute and think about a typical day and what you made time for. It’s time we put ourselves on that list too.

So how can you find “Me” time?

  1. Ask people for help, you do so much for other people I’m sure someone would love the chance to help you for a change. People love to feel like they can be of service.
  1. Wake up an extra 30 minutes early and use that as your “me” time. I used to wake up at 4:30am so I could workout before I started mommy duty and work. It was early as heck but I loved that “Me” time! It set me up for a calm productive day.
  1. Make a specific hour-to-hour schedule for the day and include your “Me” time in there. Here is a funny fact; when you actually make an hour-to-hour schedule, it frees up a lot of time and helps avoid those major time waster. You know, those moments when you’re on facebook checking something then suddenly 20 minutes later you’re on some random persons page scrolling though their grandmother’s pics. Yes I’ve been there and you have too ;).

Finally self-care is completely personal. To some people self-care would be sitting in a quite room, writing in a journal or reading their favorite book. To others it would be getting a massage or their hair done. Self care is whatever makes you feel whole again, whatever centres you and allows you to relax and breath again. Find what works for you. Test out different things and see what makes you feel best.

I hope you understand why self-care is not an option. It’s a complete necessity. We as women do so much for every one else.. we need to take care of US too! When we are in tip-top shape everyone benefits around us.

Sometimes as women we feel isolated and on our own when in actuality many of us are going through the same struggles and challenges. When women come together and support each other we are unstoppable! That is why I have created a new facebook group/community for 18 + women to come together for support, inspiration, empowerment and some laughs only women would understand 😉
