How to Stop Worrying About Things You Can’t Control
Worrying about things beyond your control is one of the fastest ways to drain your energy and derail your focus.
For powerful entrepreneurs and high achievers, this habit can subtly sabotage your success, keeping you stuck in an endless loop of what-ifs and worst-case scenarios.
I know this because I’ve been there. In my early 20s I would spend countless nights lying awake, looping the same thoughts over and over. It wasn’t just frustrating, it became an addiction to worry, a way of convincing myself that if I obsessed over every detail, I could somehow control the outcome.
But instead of control, I was left feeling powerless and exhausted.
The turning point came when I realized that worry was just my mind’s way of grasping for certainty. The truth? Certainty doesn’t come from worrying. it comes from intentional action, clarity, and trust in yourself and a higher purpose.
Here’s the process I used to stop worrying and take back control, and how you can too…
If you’re ready to give up the addition and intentionally create more peace for yourself.

Step 1: Track Your Thoughts
As high achievers, we thrive on strategy and awareness. The first step to breaking the worry cycle is identifying what’s really going on. Whenever you catch yourself spiralling, pause and ask, What am I actually worried about here?
For me, those sleepless nights were often fueled by a fear of failure or not being enough. But I couldn’t address those fears until I named them. Writing them down helped me take back control. When you put your thoughts on paper, they lose their power and become manageable.
Step 2: Question Your Worries
Once you’ve identified your worries, it’s time to challenge them. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- Is this really true?
- Am I imagining worst-case scenarios?
- What evidence do I have to support this thought?
I remember one specific worry that haunted me: What if I’m not good enough to lead my clients to success? That thought would spiral until it felt paralyzing. But when I stopped and questioned it, I realized it wasn’t true. The testimonials and breakthroughs my clients experienced were undeniable proof of my impact. Challenging that worry gave me the clarity to move forward.

Step 3: Reframe Your Stories
High achievers often have a relentless inner critic. Instead of letting it run the show, take control of your narrative. Replace harsh, critical thoughts with empowering ones.
For example:
- Instead of: “I’ll never figure this out.”
- Try: “I’m capable of solving complex problems. I’ve done it before, and I can do it again.”
This shift isn’t about ignoring reality; it’s about stepping into the version of yourself that you know you can be.
I started telling myself, I don’t have to have all the answers right now. The path will unfold as I take action.
How to stop worrying about things? You have to tell a new story…

Step 4: Practice Radical Self-Compassion
Talk to yourself like you would a trusted peer or mentor. If a colleague came to you feeling overwhelmed, you wouldn’t say, “You’re failing at this bro.”
You’d remind them of their strengths and encourage them to keep going.
Apply that same kindness to yourself.
I often use affirmations like, “I’m capable of handling anything that comes my way,” or, “I have the tools and resilience to figure this out.” Over time, these small affirmations rewired my inner dialogue and helped me approach challenges with confidence.
Step 5: Focus on What You Can Control
Entrepreneurs and high achievers often feel the weight of needing to control everything. But the most successful leaders know when to let go of what they can’t influence and channel their energy into what they can.
Ask yourself: What’s one thing I can do right now to move forward? During my sleepless nights, this mindset shift was transformational. Sometimes it was as simple as creating a game plan for the next day or having an honest conversation with someone I trusted.
Action — not worry — brings clarity and momentum.

Step 6: Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Perfectionism often drives worry. We set impossibly high standards and then stress when we don’t meet them. Instead, focus on celebrating progress. At the end of each day, write down one or two things you’re proud of. It could be as small as making a tough phone call or as big as landing a new client.
When I started this practice, it felt almost trivial. But over time, I realized these small wins were the foundation of my confidence. They reminded me that I was capable and moving forward, even when it didn’t feel like it.
Step 7: Reclaim Your Time with Mindfulness
Mindfulness isn’t just for meditation retreats… it’s a powerful tool for regaining focus and clarity.
Try this:
- Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.
- Focus on the sensation of your breath moving in and out.
- When your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring it back to your breath.
This simple exercise can snap you out of worry loops and help you re-center in the present moment, where your power truly lies.

Step 8: Build a Network of High-Value Connections
No entrepreneur succeeds in isolation. Surround yourself with people who inspire, challenge, and support you. Whether it’s a coach, mastermind group, or trusted advisor, having someone to turn to can help you gain perspective and stay grounded. Consider booking a test-drive consult and speak to me about private coaching.

Worry thrives on inaction. The more you hesitate, the louder those fears become. Instead, focus on taking aligned, decisive steps that move you toward your goals. Remember, clarity comes from action, not from overthinking.
Aligned action doesn’t mean doing everything at once. It means doing the right things. Start by identifying what aligns with your bigger vision and values. What action can you take today that feels meaningful and intentional?
I’ve seen clients stuck in analysis paralysis, overthinking every detail of their next move. But when they took just one small step… whether it was making a single important phone call, sending an email, or outlining their next big idea… it created momentum. That single action often unlocked more clarity and confidence than hours of deliberation ever could. This is a huge part of my Magnetic Leader Blueprint within the Magnetic Leadership Accelerator.
Remember, action is a signal to your mind that you’re in control. Even if it’s imperfect, it’s progress. You’ll never have all the answers, but you don’t need them to start.
Trust that each step forward will illuminate the path ahead. The key is to move… not perfectly, but purposefully.

Final Thoughts
Letting go of worry isn’t about ignoring life’s challenges; it’s about stepping into your power. As a high achiever, you already have the tools to navigate uncertainty. By shifting your focus to what you can control, showing yourself compassion, and taking aligned action, you’ll free up energy to lead with confidence and clarity.
You are capable of extraordinary things. The next time worry creeps in, remind yourself: I’ve got this. I’ve handled hard things before, and I will again. I can trust the unfolding of life and all it includes.
