Leadership Confidence: How to Recover from Confidence Setbacks
Confidence crises happen to even the most successful leaders, but they’re actually opportunities for healing deeper wounds that have always limited our potential.
• Confidence challenges often amplify insecurities that were already present beneath the surface
• High-achieving leaders tend to compartmentalize their insecurities to reach their current positions
• External achievements can only take you so far before inner work becomes necessary
• Current triggers usually mirror unresolved wounds from our past experiences
• Confidence is our natural state—we don’t need to build it, we need to release what’s blocking it
• Many high achievers are driven by feelings of “not-enoughness” seeking external validation
• Trying to fix confidence through more achievements perpetuates the unhealthy cycle
• Professional support helps identify blind spots and precise healing approaches more efficiently
• Unaddressed confidence issues impact everything from leadership presence to business decisions
• The outcome of this deeper work isn’t just restored confidence but quantum leaps in performance

Welcome to the show, leaders. I am super excited that you’re here with me today. This episode is for the leader who looks powerful on the outside—who is powerful—but may not feel that way anymore because something has affected your confidence. Whether that’s a person in power saying something critical or completely out of line, a circumstance where you felt overlooked, or a situation where you were passed over, minimized, or questioned, it can shake you.
Maybe something in your environment is making you feel unseen and undervalued. You’re putting in a lot of work, but you’re not seeing it reflected back—and this can have a huge impact on confidence, even if you were wildly confident in the past. If that’s you, know you’re not alone. I’ve coached exceptional leaders—top of their game—who have faced this. One client was literally the top in Canada in her profession, yet she experienced it too.

First, let’s point out that when these cracks appear, they’re often amplifying what was already there. When we have an insecurity, we can shove it down and still perform, stay in our zone of genius, or simply ignore it. That’s fine; insecurities are part of human nature. But to reach the next level, we have to deal with the internal stuff. External effort only gets us so far. Everything outside is a reflection of what’s happening inside.
So it’s about dealing with the wounding, the places we feel not enough or unsafe. Moments that rock our confidence usually highlight what was already there. It’s not that something is broken in you that needs to be fixed—it’s a mirror, showing you what’s ready for healing.
05:18
Let’s be honest: life isn’t just about achieving. Achievement is great, and some of us are here to achieve big things, but another part of our purpose is to heal, learn, grow, and expand. So these moments become opportunities for deep, meaningful work on ourselves. Instead of thinking, “Oh no, something’s wrong and I need fixing,” see it as a chance to heal and let go.

I’m thinking of one brilliant client. Coaching extraordinary performers is healing for me too, because I see that everyone—no matter how high-achieving—has insecurities. Social media filters can make it seem like everyone else’s life, body, career, and relationship are perfect and we’re the dysfunctional ones, which is far from the truth. Leaders especially feel isolated: “Am I even allowed to feel this?” They’re the ones others look up to, so admitting they feel like they’re crumbling inside can be disorienting.

Back to that client: he was exceptionally skilled, but a toxic authority figure at work triggered him. Sometimes confidence gets hit by a misunderstanding; in this case, it was genuinely abusive. When we dug deep, the authority figure mirrored wounds from his father. The healing had to start there—around shame and the self-concept that no matter how much he achieved, he’d never be enough. Once he did that inner work, he set firm boundaries and eventually moved to a different environment.

If your confidence feels shaken, recognize it’s just an experience—an invitation to recalibrate to your authentic power state (something we cover in the Magnetic Leadership Accelerator). At your core, you are confident. Confidence is natural; it existed before the world told you otherwise.

13:05
Ask yourself: “Is this mirroring an old insecurity?” It may be a single past event or a recurring theme of not feeling enough. Nearly every high achiever I meet has some version of that pattern—often the very thing that fuels their drive to excel.
14:12
So, what healing will you choose? You can work solo, which may take longer and cost more in missed time and energy, or you can get professional support (which I recommend). A coach helps you bypass blind spots and zero-in on the root causes.
15:29
Another client dealt with a similarly unhealthy authority figure. I hesitate to label people as “toxic”—most are just wounded and unaware—but their behavior still causes harm. She needed boundaries or she’d keep stepping into the lion’s den. Sometimes you leave completely; sometimes you set clear limits.

17:15 — Speaker 1 (Host)
This is why professional help matters: it provides an outside view.
Speaker 2 (Host) – 17:22
Many leaders try to earn confidence back through another achievement—another title, degree, or certification—hoping external proof will solve the internal issue. It doesn’t. We must address the root trigger. If the wound isn’t there, you’d brush off the setback. Abuse is different, but take a non-abusive example: if you get passed over for a promotion and lack that insecurity, you’d simply analyze what to improve and try again. It might sting, but it wouldn’t gut your confidence.

When clients come to me, their shaken confidence isn’t a mild slump—it ripples through work, life, and self-esteem. Leaders often hide it because of image and reputation, which only piles on shame. My work releases those heavy emotions so they stop dragging you down. Whether you run a business or work in an organization, unhealed wounds will limit pricing, visibility, leadership, and growth.
23:16
The bonus of doing this deep work? You don’t just recover; you break through ceilings. You connect today’s pain to an old wound, heal it, and leap forward. You’ll see shifts in respect, value, income, position, business growth—because you changed at the root. If you’d like my help, visit my website and book a call. We can discuss private coaching or the Magnetic Leadership Accelerator group program. Many start privately, then join MLA for continued momentum.
Leaders, I appreciate you. Thank you for listening. Let’s stay connected.
